Learning Outcomes: • The student can calculate the driving force for a phase transformation as a function of undercooling. • The student can delineate the conditions for achieving certain microstructure during solidification of the alloy and can compare the mechanical properties of different alloys based on this information. • The student can calculate the rate of a diffusion controlled phase transformation given the necessary inputs. • Given an alloy that shows a martensitic transformation, the student can identify whether it would demonstrate shape memory or not. • Based on the phase diagrams features, the student can compare different systems in terms of their glass forming ability and identify the glass forming alloys. Objectives: To make students understand advanced topics in Phase transformations.
