This course seeks to acquaint students with the fundamentals of the ultrasound technique, particularly as applicable in: -- Non-destructive evaluation (NDE) ,structural health monitoring (SHM) -- Non-invasive biomedical imaging & diagnostics Specifically, the following aspects will be covered: -- Wave propagation and scattering in unbounded media and waveguides. -- Common transduction methods and physical principles enabling them. -- Numerical modelling techniques for visualization of wave phenomena will be introduced. -- An overview of interpretation of wave scattering effects and inversion methods for material property or structural feature extraction . -- How the principles of ultrasound physics are exploited in making a typical pulse-echo ultrasound scanner that is routinely used in imaging the biological tissues.
