How has science and the scientific community created its authority and its relationships with other parts of society? In today's "Knowledge Society" everybody should arguably know more about science, at the same time as the authority of scientific knowledge and practice is questioned. While scientific communities and institutions remain highly hierarchical there has been a call for public engagement with research for the sake of democracy. In the course we will examine how these different spheres of 'science' and 'the public' (or different publics) have been created, how they are maintained and which functions they serve.
